In a world where customization is disappearing, it would be awesome if we were allowed to add background images to our profiles. (It's mandatory that you hear this entire thing in the movie trailer narrator's voice. The old one.)

That would be very unlikely to happen. People pull enough BS with their profile images as is. Not a day seems to go by where I don't report at least one NSFW-avatar or -background image. (I'm calling the image in the background at the top the "background image".)
And users could 'hide' a lot of stuff in images that are largely covered...

That’s an unfortunate, but understandable reason. NewGrounds has always been a bit chaos-happy, so I can see how that level of moderation would be taxing.
